About Us

Mark Twain Brewing Company opened its doors July 4th, 2014. Owner Lance Smith sought an opportunity to reinvest in the town of his birth and childhood--which also just so happens to have been the hometown of the most famous American author who ever lived, Mark Twain. Over the past several decades, Small Town America has struggled to survive. Cities that once boomed and were centers of commerce and economic strength, have dwindled in population and suffered from a lack of available jobs. Hannibal, once a lumber town, thriving from its situation on the Mississippi River, has seen those challenges but faced them head-on. New businesses are opening in the once-quiet historic downtown area. Young people are moving back to Hannibal, not away. There is a renewed vibrancy in our city, and it's palpable. We're thrilled to be a part of that.

The history of our building is as sacred to us as the beer we make and the made-from-scratch food we serve. Once a Ford Model T manufacturing facility, our building's interior still possesses vestiges of its original intent. Structural items from historic homes and businesses in the community that had fallen into disrepair over the years, have been reclaimed and incorporated into our dining areas and bars, as a way of preserving the history of Hannibal. Our taproom sits right on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi River, with expansive, breathtaking views that define the landscape of our home. But most importantly, Mark Twain Brewing Company is a gathering place for our small community and visitors alike. A place for old friends to reunite, and new friends to meet. A place to celebrate the endurance and spirit of "America's Hometown." Spend an hour or two at our brewery and restaurant, and we think you'll understand what makes our business--and Hannibal itself--so special.
