THEY DIDN'T FIND HANNIBAL. THEY FOUNDED IT.

We take great pride in being located across the street from the boyhood home of Mark Twain, but we have some history, too. First of all, one of the brewery’s owners, Bill Martin, is related to Moses Bates, Hannibal’s founding father, as Bates’ sister Winifred is Martin’s great-great-great grandmother. According to letters, Moses and Winifred had planned a short trip to Kentucky to visit their uncle, but Moses fled west in a huff after an argument with his father. Winifred said to their dad something along the lines of, “Don’t worry. I’ll go fetch him, and in a few short days, we’ll return home.” Well, neither ever returned home again, and the rest is Hannibal history.

KNOWN TO EVERYONE. LIKED BY ALL.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens is born in nearby Florida, Missouri. Lucky for us, four years later, his family relocated to Hannibal, where he would spend the rest of his childhood. Little did he know that many years later, a brewery would be named in his honor. We suspect he would’ve wholeheartedly approved. You can’t kick a stone without it hitting something with Mark Twain’s name on it. Heck, chances are, you’re kicking a stone Mark Twain kicked. (Please see our gift shop, Mark Twain stones, 3 for $7.99) But seriously, what’s wrong with that? The man was a true American humorist and world traveler. So lighten up, Chester. Let’s just go with the Mark Twain flow. He would have appreciated it.

FROM CARS TO BARS.

In the 1920’s, the main structure of our pub housed a company that manufactured and installed the wooden cabs and truck beds for Model T Ford delivery trucks. Our grain lift you see upstairs in the Texas Room was originally installed to move those Model T’s between the two floors! Later, the location was home to the Murphy Motors Dodge Dealership before becoming the Mark Twain Brewing Company.

AMERICA'S HOMETOWN BREWERY

The Mark Twain Brewing Company features a bar and restaurant with seating for up to 150 (bring some friends) and a beer garden (it’s a nice idea, but sadly, we’re not growing it). The second floor features an outdoor balcony and a bar overlooking the mighty Mississippi and historic downtown Hannibal. Our 10-barrel American-made brewhouse produces every drop of our curious and entertaining line of craft beers, many inspired by the characters from Twain’s stories.

MR. AND MRS. BEER

Our brewers, Dave Alley and Cat Golden, have been a team for many years–not only as professional brewers, but also in marriage! After years of homebrewing together, Dave and Cat left their home in Tennessee and moved to St. Louis to learn the craft of brewing on a professional scale. Several years later, it was only appropriate that their adventure in the craft beer world landed them here at Mark Twain Brewing, as their life together is a testament to the venerable author’s musings on risk and achievement: “All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then Success is sure.”
